ISLAND OF MALLORCA, SPAIN --- Former Tusculum College men's basketball forward Douglas Tshomba has signed to play professionally for Drac Inca in Spain announced College officials. Drac Inca is a member of the Spanish Basketball League (LEB) and is located on the Island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea.
Tshomba, a 6-7, 185-pound native of Brussels, Belgium garnered All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team honors this season as he averaged 12.9 points per game, including 17.7 ppg in league action. Tshomba finished 47th in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage last year shooting 83.7 percent from the foul line. That average was also fourth best in a season at Tusculum. He shot 84.9 percent from the charity stripe for his career, which is third in both the TC and South Atlantic Conference record books.
"I am really excited and looking forward to the opportunity to play in Spain," said Tshomba. "Playing professionally has always been a dream of mine and this experience is bringing me one step closer to my ultimate goal of playing in the NBA."
In 2004-05, Tshomba averaged 12.5 points per contest, including 16.3 ppg in his last four outings as the Pioneers captured their first-ever Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title while making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance. Tshomba shot 87.4 percent from the free throw line, which was fourth best in league history and eighth in NCAA II that season.
“We couldn't be happier for Doug, he is very deserving of this outstanding opportunity and I know that he will continue to make all of us here at Tusculum so very proud,” said Pioneer head coach Jim Boone. “Selfishly, I would love to have had one more year to coach Doug - our time together went all too fast. He is a tremendous basketball player with awesome potential, but as good as he is on the court, he is an even better person. Doug has been an absolute pleasure to coach, and again we are all so proud of all he has and will accomplish.”
In his first season at Tusculum (2003-04), Tshomba added eight points per game off the bench as the Pioneers went 19-8 while capturing the South Atlantic Conference Championship. During his three years in Greeneville, the Pioneers posted a 51-34 record.
“I just want to take this time to say thank you to Tusculum College and all who have made this experience so great,” added Tshomba. “I especially wish to thank all my teammates, coaches, teachers and everyone who has been personally involved with me during my time at Tusculum.”
Tusculum College, located in Greeneville, Tenn., is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, USA and is a NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference which is comprised of nine colleges and universities in Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
